To date, Kōhō has made more than thirty prints of flowers and (or) birds using two techniques; namely, wood engraving (pictures 1-5) and woodblock printing (pictures 6-10). In wood engraving the picture design is inscribed on a cross-section of tree stem using engraver tools while in woodblock printing picture designs are chiselled onto a longitundinally-cut piece of a tree stem. Kōhō’s bird of choice for most of his flower-bird prints was the owl which is a symbol of good fortune in modern Japanese art. Click on a picture to enlarge it. To see more prints by Kōhō click here.
